ScreenFlow 5 App Reviews

great functionality but unusably buggy

Using this on a Macbook 15 Retina with Yosemite and Screenflow freezes on a regular basis. More often, the video display will not resemble the actual video or transitions that are playing, which makes it unusable to me. This was already the case with Screenflow 4, it seems this hasn’t been fixed. I’ve been looking at Final Cut Pro since, which works fine but is a bit fiddly and lacks a few great features that Screenflow does have (snapping to guidelines in the video display). Screenflow 5 does have great features and funcitonality, offers ease of use, but this is all worthless, since you don’t feel safe in any project. It will act weirdly in every project I do. The videos I’m editing are in the Apple Pro Res format, so this shouldn’t be the issue. I’d recommend, until this software is stable and you’re looking for a bit of video editing functionality, look another way. And, until then, 1 out of 5.

Does not generate the right format for AppStore Previews - UPDATED

In general, this app works mostly well except for a few error messages, when adjusting the font size for instance. However, the biggest issue is, that it writs a .mov file that doesn’t conform to the AppSTore Preview guideline. It looks as the video has much more FPS even though I selected 30 FPS in the export settings. The file is way larger as it needs to be. Once converted with Final Cut Pro (which I wanted to prevent to use due to it’s odd UI) the resulting file was about 10 times smaller and worked with the AppStore. I will contact the developers and will keep this review updated. UPDATE: The developers were very responsive and quick. However, even though they claim that the format is correct (they use the ProRes profile which is indeed one Apple claims to accept) Apple DOES NOT accept the Preview Movie generated by this app. Second, even if Apple would accept it, it is way too big. A 30 second movie will always be larger than the possible 500 MB if made for an iPad of iPhone 6 plus. So from this point, it is not possible with this app to generate Preview Movies. Another issue just arose: I started maintaining the project files of the app on my Windows Server share. Once I did this, the app claims that I don’t have sufficient access rights, which is wrong. All my other files and even the big Final Cut project directories are on the same server and all can be opened and stored from my Macs without a problem. I did try SMB and CIFS just in case - without any difference. So I have to copy down the project files to the local HD in order to maintain them and then copy them back in order to get it working. So I think this app needs some major improvemends and testing before it can be used. Definitely something I expected for this (too) high price.

Great

Works :) Just don’t launch it from the App store directly since you’ll get: ScreenFlow is required to be launched from within the /Applications folder, and cannot run from its current location of "/Applications/ScreenFlow.localized"

Almost Camtasia

One of the new features in version 5, is the ability to record the screen of an attached iPad - except its not clear exactly how to set this up - using a Thunderbolt cable plugged into a USB slot on my iMac running Yosemite, I was able to record the attached iPad Mini running IOS 8.x - however I couldn’t watch (monitor) what was recording on the iMac - only after the recording stopped, did the iPad screen recorded video appear on the ScreenFlow timeline. Tech-Support will cost you another $29 (called Premium Support) - and the documentation videos need to be more in-depth. This is where Camtasia Studio for the Mac is superior - how they treat their customers - and that they listen carefully to their customers suggestions or complaints.

ScreenFlow5

nothing really new except that it has the ability to record iPhone and iPads and iPods

A bit buggy but I like the direction

I would probably give it a 5 star as I’m a huge ScreenFlow fan. But it’s got some really buggy issues with audio. If you split a clip it seems to randomely jump the audio and then everything is off sync until you go to the next section (assuming you have multiple video tracks). It’s very inconsistent and I can’t seem to replicate it. Once they get that bug fixed it’s 5 star all the way. Which makes it very ineffective for producing content as you have to watch the entire video you make to see if it skipped a second of audio. Sorry ScreenFlow… fix it and I’ll fix my score. I love you guys and will still spread the word.

Disappointing

I have been using Screenflow for years, but this is the worst release. The other reviews are correct, it is a bit buggy. Please fix the bug with the video capture, and I will gladly change my review. I visited the support page before I made this review and even tried reinstalling. I will go back to Screenflow 4 until it is fixed.

60fps

I’m also a little upset that you had to pay for a new update, but I think Screenflow 5 is great! 1 thing I’m upset about is with the new youtube thing (I record gaming videos) it won’t let you record at the new 60fps. I hope they update that, and I sure hope that I won’t have to pay for that update. Thank you! ;-)

Don’t upgrade yet

Love ScreenFlow 4 – powerful, easy to use, with unmatched quality in every respect. Unfortunately the ScreenFlow 5 update, while it offers nice features, has also introduced several huge bugs: – Visual and audio sync often mysteriously drift out of sync. – All operations seem sluggish, and scrubbing while editing is often a painful experience – Editing is now much slower due to interface bugs and sluggishness Telestream’s response to my email was unhelpful and dismissive. After pouring many hundreds of dollars into their corporate coffers I somehow expected at least marginal attempt to diagnose the issues – instead they chose to ignore my experiences – documented on two fast machines – both with the same performance issues. Best advice is test the latest release extensively before purchase – but for now – I cannot recommend Screenflow 5 for any serious user.

What a disappointment

So, I went ahead and purchased the AppStore version, eventhough the bundle version was half the price. I fingured it would be simpler when it came to updates. Bottom line is I expected to use it to record Facetime Calls from my Mac. I haven’t gotting it right yet. I’ve recorded the audio, great… but eventhough I did my best to select the right “record this” settings, i have yet to capture my conversation with my mother. Boy, I which I could get my money, time, and effort back. Even thinking about it, upset me. I’m updating this… I just tried to reach support… in the end, the “captch” spam guard ask me for “Type the two words” when there was only one number displayed. What type of riddle is that? The other thing.. is that the subject “How can I help you” had two options, 1. Password and login, 2. Billing Issues. … to double check my answers, I now see “Tech Support”, which I am sure was my 1st option, but wasn’t an option after the validation failed. (Now, I’m wondering if this product and support is just trying to make me crazy).

Still a great app

I’ve been using Screenflow since version 2. There was enough feature additions to make this a major upgrade. It’d be nice if Apple had upgrade pricing for people who had the previous version, but that’s for another conversation. This is a great app. I was surprised to see negative reviews. It’s main purpose is for creating tutorials and such, but I use it quite a bit as a video editor as well. It feels a lot like a system app - a lot of features, easy to navigate, and still very light. One of the first few apps I install when setting up any new production computer.

Good Program With A Learning Curve

I have used ScreenFlow for a couple of versions now. I am not a heavy user of the App but have used it for several business and personal projects. So far after upgrading to ScreenFlow 5 I have seen no major issues and found it to be both stable and snappy on my 2013 iMac. There is a learning curve to be sure if you are a new user - this is not iMovie. It has many great features but you will need time to learn. I find a couple of the features, such as callouts and other video effects, to be difficult to edit once created. It can be difficult to edit the effect without grabbing the entire clip. However, overall this is a very useful App and I have seen none of the issues reported in other v5 reviews.

Amazing and Heroic Multi-Screen Capture

I had Screenflow 4 and didn’t use it that much. But now I found I had a complicated project that involved capturing my iMac Retina 5K screen, as well as the Facetime camera, as well as the iPhone screen. Screenflow 5 does this on my machine with now problems at all. Mind you…it is capturing a 5K x 2K screen at what….30 frames per second, AND the Facetime camera, AND the live iPhone screen, AND the audio on the Facetime camera, AND the computer audio (with the separate driver). Once you’ve capture all this media, you can arrange it however you want, and then you can export it at whatever resolution and data rate you want. It seems to me that taking the 5K screen and outputting to 1080 HD proceeds at maybe 2x real time. So 2 minutes of recorded content might take about a minute to render to H.264 So far, I haven’t had any problems. No bugs, no crashes. The program’s performance … for $99 and able install my stable of Mac’s…I’d say its a great deal. Another nice thing….when I showed people what it could, their jaws dropped. And these aren’t people new to technology. If you have a iMac Retina 5K, you’ll get a special thrill when you run Screenflow 5. By the way - you can run the iPhone camera and capture the iPhone screen… and thus the camera in sync with everything else. This means you can create a three camera shoot in one pass - Screen, Facetime, and iPhone. How cool is that?

Expensive, but worth it.

I’ve used screenflow for years, it’s a bit pricy but has never let me down!

Good for simple tasks

This app does a nice job when it comes to screencasting. Basically, if all you need to do is record a simple session, then this app will work servicably. If you need to do anything more with it, you are in a world of hurt. This app is riddled with bugs. By creating a dissolve between two clips, the visual indicators of your audio levels will disappear. Playback after awhile becomes choppy like you were watching a video over a bad internet connection. Animating via. actions is incredibly clunky and often times doesnt work. Lately, when exporting out, it will render large sections of black forcing me to re-render over and over again until it finally produces a watchable video. Theres nothing like exporting a video for an hour only to find it is unwatchable. Thankfully, I bought this when it was on sale. As is, the program is a world of hurt. Im currently training up on Final Cut Pro so I wont have to touch this program again except to make simple screencasts. Final Cut Pro may be expensive relative to Screenflow, but Ill gladly pay extra for a video editor that actually works.

New update is not working as advertised.

The latest update stated that you would be able to upload videos to YouTube in 4k. This is not the case. The video has fully processed and is only in 1080p. (And yes, I did record the video at 4k.)

**DO NOT BUY!!!**DO NOT BUY!!!**DO NOT BUY!!!**

I have used Screenflow for many years. I have worked on computers as a computer programer and in IT for years. I am also Microsoft certified. I have used Apple computers since the Apple II. Screenflow has always been an excellent program for it’s quick simplistic functions. Hit [record] then hit [stop]…simple edits….save….done!!!!! Installation has always been with ease. This new version (5.0.2) has completely left a scar on the reputation of Screenflow. And that is a shame. First off….it cost $99.99 dollars. Now before you think that my complaint is the price, well you’d be wrong. But what would you do if you bought an electric guitar, took it home and it made no sounds? Bet you’d want your money back, am I right?!! So I go to the App Store, pay the almost ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS, and download the app onto my Macbook Pro running OS X Yosemite with an Intel I7 Core. The app tells me I must now go to the website and download drivers if I want it to record the computers sound. I follow the directions and download the drivers and guess what….now my computer is doing a soft reset over and over. I remove all the ONE HUNDRED DOLLAR software and reinstall everything again. Nope…still doesn’t work. I can see Screenflow come up….and then it reboots. (makes the Mac feel like Windows). So I removed all the software and surprise, surprise my computer starts working again. The other negative reviews are right……I love Screenflow but this version (5.0.2) is a downgraded piece of problems. Save your money until the real Superhero called “Screenflow" returns…..

Great screencasting app for Apple

I’ve used screenflow for a couple of years now and its probably one of the best screencasting applications on the market. I like it because it offers the intuitiveness of an apple product. Its as if Apple made it. First its packed with a lot of features that make your videos pop like magnification, captions, effects, etc, but its not complex. I develop professional how to videos on youtube and its been the app I use.
